Meanwhile (and in parallel chapters throughout), Joe’s wife Zenobia, left behind on the Kenworthy plantation in Mississippi, plans to escape to freedom with her youngest children (the two eldest having been sold to another owner), aided by black field-boss Drayton, who not-so-secretly loves her. The experiences of black soldiers during the Civil War, and the ordeal of a family victimized and fragmented by slavery, are the subjects in this well-researched and solidly written debut novel, by a respected teacher and historian ( One More Day’s Journey, not reviewed, etc.).Īs the War draws to its close, runaway slave Joe Duckett escapes from a Confederate prison camp and joins the Union Army as a scout, then is soon made sergeant in a Colored Cavalry troop. We are also shown the repercussions this period has on American politics. Through flash forwards from the '40s to present day, we see the repercussions this terrible experience has on George as he finds his voice while processing what his country put him through. While his parents are just trying to get through the day and keep their family safe, young George and his brother Henry think they are going on a vacation or an adventure. Seeing this all through a young child's eyes was even more heart-wrenching. We follow a four-year-old George Takei and his family as they are forced into concentration camps during WWII because of their Japanese ancestry. I've been a big fan of graphic memoirs ever since reading Persepolis, and this book is the perfect example of why. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Tocqueville americaIf there had been an available recording of either the Mansfield/Winthrop, or the Goldhammer translations, I would have picked one of them over this. If it weren't for the horrible quality of both the Blackstone recording (excessive noise reduction, which removes all the consonants from the beginnings of words) and the Davidson narration (which is read with an annoyingly laconic, "landed gentry" delivery), I would have chosen the Lawrence translation over the Reeve. Lawrence, in his translation, included the original English sources, thereby preserving de Tocqueville's intent. One thing that Reeve did in his translation, was in the sections where de Tocqueville quotes from English sources, he translated the French translation back into English - often changing the meaning - instead of inserting the original English sources. The Blackstone Audio version (narrated by Davidson), is of the George Lawrence translation (1966), which is generally more respected. This version is the original translation, by Henry Reeve, which was disliked and criticized by de Tocqueville. I got this version, simply because I couldn't tolerate the one narrated by Frederick Davidson. Most Listenable, if not the Best Translation 6/6/2023 0 Comments The bell jar endingThe Bell Jar Summary: Chapters 1-5Įsther Greenwood is a brilliant 19-year-old college student. I've always had a keen interest in the history of the Titanic, and seeing that with an added paranormal element made it so much more enticing. Set with a backdrop of the RMS Titanic, I knew that this would be a mesmerizing read. Unlike that infamous ship, this story will stay with you. Romantic and gripping, this story will swept you along with both Tess and Alec as they confront their demons and also their own fate on the doomed Titanic. There's also suspense and intrigue with the powerful Brotherhood who'll do anything, including kill people, in order to have Alec under their control. I could also see her fascination with Alec, a very handsome American, with a dangerous secret. I also loved how Tess, though a servant, had desires to do more with her life. The author did her research as all the little details such as servants having to crack water in their bowls in the morning to being punished for slight indiscertions ring true and give added dept to this tale. Tess is very believable as a maid of a British family of noble birth. You'd think the idea of adding werewolves might be a tad bit too much but I loved this feature. The writing swepts you away with language that is authetic to the time period. Fateful is thrilling and each page captivates you into wanting to find out what happens to our heroine and the man she loves. I was excited to receive a copy of this book to review. I'm also a huge fan of anything Titanic related. |
